Erection problems (erectile dysfunction)

Erection problems mean you can't get or keep an erection firm enough for sex. They become more common with age, and there are treatments that can help.

What can cause them

Causes can be physical, such as blood vessel or nerve problems, low testosterone, diabetes or high blood pressure, side effects of some medicines, or surgery such as for prostate cancer.

They can also come from mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, stress or grief, and drinking too much alcohol or smoking can play a part.

When it is common, and when to call a doctor

Having erection problems now and then is common. If it happens often and upsets you or your partner, it is okay to call your doctor.

Get medical care right away for an erection that lasts longer than 3 hours, or for chest pain after taking an erection pill.

What treatment can involve

Treatment depends on the cause. HealthLink BC lists options such as cutting back on tobacco, drugs and alcohol, talking with your partner and counselling, reviewing medicines that may be causing the problem, prescription pills, vacuum devices and, in some cases, surgery.

Erection pills can be dangerous with nitroglycerin or other nitrate medicines for heart disease, so ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking one. This page does not give dosing or treatment advice.

Lowering your risk

A healthy lifestyle helps: eat well, be active, don't smoke, limit alcohol, and manage blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.
